Safeguarding Policy

Keeping Every Student Safe

Project Juntos is built for young people. This page explains in plain English exactly how we protect every student on our platform — and what to do if you ever feel unsafe.

Our Commitment to You

Project Juntos was created to connect young people across cultures — and keeping every student safe is the most important thing we do. Every feature on this platform has been designed with your safety in mind.

We believe that young people deserve a space where they can explore the world, make new friends, and learn about different cultures — without ever feeling threatened or uncomfortable. If something ever goes wrong, we are here to help immediately.

Who Oversees Safety

Safety on Project Juntos works in three layers. Each layer provides an extra level of protection for every student.

1

Your Assigned Teacher

Every student on Project Juntos is connected to a teacher at their school. Your teacher can see all your conversations at any time and will be the first person to respond if anything is flagged in your chats.

2

Your School's Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL)

Your school has a designated safeguarding lead — a trained adult whose job is to protect students. If a concern is serious, your teacher will escalate it to the DSL, who will follow your school's safeguarding procedures.

The Project Juntos Platform Safety Team

Our dedicated safety team monitors the platform and reviews escalated reports. You can contact us directly at any time:

How We Protect Students in Chat

Our messaging system has multiple layers of protection built in. Here's exactly what happens every time a message is sent:

Every message is scanned

Before a message is delivered, it is automatically checked for harmful content — including inappropriate language, personal information, and patterns that could indicate grooming or bullying.

Teachers can view all conversations

Your assigned teacher has access to all your conversations on Project Juntos at any time. This is to keep you safe — not to spy on you.

Every message has a Report button

You can report any message instantly by clicking the flag icon next to it. Reports go directly to your teacher and our safety team.

Block anyone instantly

You can block any user at any time. Once blocked, they cannot send you messages or see your profile. Blocking is immediate and permanent unless you choose to unblock.

Students on Project Juntos can only message people they have been matched with. You cannot receive messages from strangers or people outside your match list.

How We Handle Reports

When you report a message, here is exactly what happens — step by step:

1

Your report is received immediately. The flagged message is placed on hold and sent to your teacher's review queue. The person who sent the message will not know you reported it.

2

Your teacher reviews it within 24 hours. In most cases, your teacher will review the report within a few hours. For urgent or serious reports, our safety team is also notified immediately.

3

Action is taken. Depending on the report, the teacher or safety team can: approve the message if it was a false alarm, remove the message permanently, issue a warning to the sender, suspend the sender's account, or escalate to the school's safeguarding lead or authorities.

4

You are kept informed. You will receive a notification when your report has been reviewed and what action was taken. You will never be left wondering what happened.

Your identity is protected. The person you reported will never be told who made the report.

What to Do If You Feel Unsafe

If something makes you feel uncomfortable, scared, or unsafe — act now. You are not overreacting.

1

Use the Report or Block button. Every message on Project Juntos has a report button (the flag icon). You can also block the person instantly. This takes just a few seconds.

2

Tell a trusted adult. Talk to your teacher, a parent or guardian, or your school counsellor. You don't have to deal with this alone. Show them this page if it helps explain what happened.

3

Contact us directly. Email our safeguarding team at [email protected]. We respond to all safeguarding emails within 4 hours during school hours.

If you are in immediate danger, do not wait — call your local emergency services (999 in the UK, 911 in the US, 112 in Europe) right away.

Information for Parents and Guardians

We know that parents want to understand exactly what data is collected about their child and how it is used. Here is everything you need to know.

What data do we collect?

We collect only the information needed to run the platform safely: your child's name, age, school, country, and the messages they send on the platform. We do not collect home addresses, phone numbers, or financial information. We do not sell data to third parties.

Can I see my child's data?

Yes. You have the right to request a copy of all data we hold about your child. Email us at [email protected] and we will respond within 30 days.

Can I request deletion of my child's data?

Yes. You can request that we delete your child's account and all associated data at any time. Once requested, all personal data will be permanently erased within 30 days. Email [email protected] to make this request.

How do I withdraw consent?

If you wish to withdraw your consent for your child to use Project Juntos, email us at [email protected]. We will deactivate the account within 24 hours and begin the data deletion process.

Parental consent for under-16s

Students under 16 in the UK and EU are required to provide parental or guardian consent before using Project Juntos. This is collected during the registration process. For students in the United States under 13, we follow the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) and require verifiable parental consent.

All messages on Project Juntos are stored securely and can only be accessed by the student, their assigned teacher, and our safety team. We never share message content with advertisers or third parties.

Our Compliance

Project Juntos is designed and operated in compliance with the following laws and standards:

UK Online Safety Act

We implement robust safeguards for children and young people as required by UK law.

We protect personal data and uphold the rights of students and their families under UK data protection law.

Reporting illegal content

If you believe you have encountered illegal content on Project Juntos — including child sexual abuse material (CSAM) or grooming behaviour — report it immediately to our safety team at [email protected]. We are legally required to report such content to the relevant authorities, including the National Crime Agency (UK) and NCMEC (USA), and we will do so without delay.
